-
- : I'm afraid that's the whole point: Amiga users, generally speaking, are not
- : interested in Being Hot Shit. They just want to use and enjoy their systems
- : in peace.
-
- That is far from the truth in ever way. Amiga owners have always been the
- kind of lot that point to 060 based Toaster systems saying "Thats what our
- platform can do!!!" while only having a stock A500 themselves. Amiga
- users always try to point out that AmigaOS is a "magic Operating System"
- that will make your A1000 runs applications better than a Pentium. It has
- only been in the last few years that they have been starting to settle
- down. Perhaps even they realize that they are full of hot air. After
- all, the average non-stock Amiga is still only an 020 system, while the
- average PC around that runs newer applications is at least a 486/66, and
- most likely is either a fast 486 or a slow Pentium.
-
- You do have to realize that there is a wide gap between what a "Hot Shit
- Amiga", a "Usable Amiga", and a "Stock Low End Amiga" is. If you are
- content with using pre-1990 applications, then your Stock A500 will be
- fine. But many people won't settle for that - they want to use Final
- Writer, IBrowse, or some other powerful home application or game. But
- what is wrong is that they *EXPECT* it to work *WELL* on a 68000/7 with
- 1MB of memory. In fact, they *EXPECT* it to multitask with other
- applications.
-
- An 030 based Amiga with 4 to 8MB of memory and perhaps a 120MB SCSI hard
- drive running AmigaOS 2.x or 3.x is far from being "Hot Shit". Yet the
- tasks I said in the previous message can be done on this system just as
- well. Is it magic? Is it a mystic sign? No, its reality, and anyone
- with $250 can make their A500 be the same.
-
- : In fact I, personally, have better things to do than to Be Hot Shit. This
- : goes for most Amiga users. "Hot Shit?" they say, "It _sounds_ better
- : than User-Friendly, but does it smell as fresh?"
-
- Good for you then. Don't be "Hot Shit". No skin off my back. If you
- don't care about being able to multitask a few apps well on your system
- then more power too you. But if some of us out there *DO* want to, don't
- bitch about it. But if you do belive that PreEmptive multitasking is hot
- shit, then you are on the wrong platform, bud. Try getting a Mac.
-
- : Hot Shit, for all its unpleasant smell, is just overcompensation for PC
- : users' feeling of Being Suckered. The one thing they know is that none
- : of their fellow victims will expose their unhappiness, because in the
- : process they would admit that they, too, had Been Suckered. So now,
- : like school bullies, all they need to do is gang together and pick on
- : the more intelligent boys to prevent being laughed at for their
- : stupidity.
-
- First off, what I explained as being "Hot Shit" had nothing to even do
- with PC's. It had to do with what an Amiga could do in the way of
- multitasking if you had the mind-set to make it do so, and anyone with at
- least an 030 and a few megabytes of memory could do the same. No big
- whoop.
-
- Second off, I am a PC user, and many of my friends are PC users. None of
- us feel "suckered" in any way. If anything, I feel suckered for buying an
- A4000 - it was way overpriced yet lacked many things that I would of
- expected from a high end Amiga.
-
- I feel that the people who designed the Amiga 3000 and AmigaOS 2.0 combo
- had a lot more vision that the people who designed the A4000 and AmigaOS
- 3.0. AmigaOS 3.x still lacks any memory protection, new RTG support code
- is next to none, making Intuition.library handle only 8-bit screens
- instead of 24-bit is laughable, there is still no real way to create a
- new task w/o dinking around with Amiga.library, GadTools.library is far
- outdated (which is why we now have that bulk of bugs called MUI), and
- Workbench itself if still a single-tasking system (ever try doing
- something with WB while you are loading some icons?), and WHAT the hell is
- the deal with AS-225? If I wanted to dink with a Berkely based Networking
- system, I'd load NetBSD up, and in any event, it can't even use the same
- socket API style as either Exec or even standard I/O sockets. Now who do
- you think has been suckered?
-
- : So next time you get into trouble with one of those types, just acquiesce him
- : with a friendly "verily sir, you Are Hot Shit". They may still give you Hot
- : Air after that, but without the offensive odour.
-
- I know what my Amiga is good at - its good at PreEmptive Multitasking
- tasks and doing heavy device I/O without bringing the system down to its
- knees. In my previous message, that was exactly what I was trying to
- point out - why brag about floppy formatting when the Amiga can multitask
- so much more?
-
- But if you want to start talking about how badly PC users have been
- dicked, go ahead. I will try my best to make you look like a fool.
-
- : Seriously, you sound like you're struggling with an Amiga Inferiority Complex.
- : I strongly advise you to download the F.U.C.K. from Aminet:
-
- : util/wb/fuck091beta.lha -- Cure your Amiga Inferiority Complex!
-
- And you sound as if you suffer from the "Oh, the big bad PC owner is
- always picking on me so I have to call them stupid" syndrome.
-
- I have no problems seeing the good points in both PCs and Amigas. Do you?
